Ann Marie Maguire

Ann Marie Maguire is a photographer and writer living year-round on an island off the coast of Maine. Co-authored with her freelance journalist and editor son, John Maguire, their biography of Helen Nicolay, Lincoln’s Secretary’s Secretary, was published in June 2017 by Atlantic Road Books, Swan’s Island. Born right after the Civil War, Helen Nicolay was a widely traveled artist who illustrated her travels with her paintings, and who authored twenty books. She was the daughter of John Nicolay, Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary.

Ann Marie Maguire also co-authored Asquam Ancestral Cookery, wrote several short stories for the Island Reader, a biography of William Arnold for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and self-published a number of photo books. Her photos have appeared in Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors, Island Journal, Island Reader, Women & Cruising, several Maine newspapers, and on the cover of Gary Rainford’s Salty Liquor.

Ann Marie has a B.A. and an M.A. in history from the University of New Hampshire, studied at the University of Maine in Orono, and was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Copenhagen. She taught at Nasson College in Springvale, Maine, and at the Fenn School in Concord, Massachusetts.
